The DVLA is preparing to introduce significant updates to driving licence services as part of its ongoing digital transformation efforts. Set for release in March 2025, one of the primary features will be a new online “share my driving licence” tool, accessible through the DVLA’s Driver and Vehicles account platform. This tool will allow drivers to generate unique share codes directly from their accounts, enabling quick, secure sharing of their information.
This new feature is expected to simplify interactions with firms such as car insurance providers, rental agencies and even potential employers. Through the generated share code, authorised companies will gain access to a driver’s essential information, including penalty points, any existing disqualifications, and an overview of permitted vehicle types. They’ll also be able to check licence expiry dates, making it easier and more efficient for firms to accurately verify a driver’s record.
According to the DVLA’s 2024/25 Business Plan, the "share my driving licence" service will streamline the process for both drivers and organisations needing verification. While motorists can already obtain a check code through the DVLA’s current online system or by contacting the DVLA’s main office in Swansea, this update aims to make the process more accessible and user-friendly.
The DVLA has also committed to increasing its digital service reach, with a target of handling over 90% of interactions through digital or automated processes this year. DVLA Chief Executive and Accounting Officer Julie Lennard highlighted the popularity of these digital services, which processed 84% of the DVLA’s 95.5 million customer transactions in the past year.
This commitment is underpinned by the DVLA’s IT infrastructure investments, which aim to build a robust digital service model. These improvements are part of a broader strategy to adapt to the needs of digital-first customers, making interactions with the DVLA smoother and faster.
